[The call comes through when Castiel is patrolling through Wonderland's extensive forest. It's not often that he gets a direct call in general, let alone in the middle of the night. The light and sound from his phone causes the wildlife around him to startle, rodents scurrying into their holes and birds taking wing to further trees.
Castiel finds himself hoping as he grabs for his phone, but he doesn't actually expect it to be Dean. It's been weeks now since he's had any contact from him, and Castiel would have wondered if something had happened if he didn't have his senses to tell him that Dean was still alive within Wonderland.
He answers immediately. Dean sounds horrible and Castiel's chest wrenches with both despair (at imagining what Dean's been going through, locked up in his room) and relief (that he's reaching out to him, finally).]
No. [His patrols are a distraction, something to do, nothing more.
He could ask if he should go to Dean, or if he only wants to talk, but in the end Castiel gives into something much more human.] It's... good to hear your voice.
[ cas answers and dean feels relief-- yet it's somewhat short-lived when he realizes that calling had only been the first step, and now... now he has to somehow figure out the rest. at least cas' comment is soft, has dean drawing in a breath and then exhaling in a quiet sigh.
only cas would say something like that to someone like him. ]
Yeah? Could say the same right back. [ it feels like they haven't spoken in forever, not since dean last saw castiel back home. but they both know that's not true, not when just some weeks ago dean had been tied to a chair in the middle of a chapel, hissing this and that at the angel.
the memory has him quickly forcing out the rest of his words. ]
I'm at the dock. And I thought-- if you wanted to...
[ here he is vaguely gesturing around despite this being a voice feed. ]
[Castiel can hear the way that Dean pulls in a breath and then releases it through the phone's receiver, and he can only guess that it's relief. Maybe Dean thought that Castiel would want nothing to do with him after everything that happened, but if that's the case, then Dean should really know better.
He could mention that Dean had the option to contact him any time in the past three weeks, but had chosen not to. He isn't bitter, though. Dean had a lot thrown into his lap after being cured, a lot of crimes that now laid on his shoulders. Castiel himself is still struggling with the guilt of not curing Dean sooner, but at least he has the chance to apologize for that now.
It has been a long time since they've spoken. That thing that had walked around calling itself Dean for a few months didn't truly count.
The dock is a place where they've had a number of important conversations, so it strikes Castiel as oddly appropriate.]
I can come by, yes.
[He waits for actual confirmation before spreading his wings, however. Right now, it seems best to handle everything gently.]
[ cas seems to get what he's going for here, and instead of making him say it, all dean has to do is nod and breathe out a few more words. ]
Okay, great-- yeah. I'll be here.
[ take your time, he wants to add but dean is too quick to turn off the feed with that... either out of need to make sure cas won't back out, or perhaps to keep himself quiet. either way, he'll be waiting on the dock. ]
