[Castiel does understand the concept of a phone, though it's not all that often that his rings with an actual call. Sometimes texts come through, but this is different. Not that he's surprised that someone's trying to contact him in light of what's happened to Dean, but...

He will say, he hadn't expected Adam.]

Yes, it was him. [He would know Dean anywhere, regardless of the dissected state of his body.]

I don't know what or who. The details have been vague -- we may have to wait until he revives to learn the answer to that. [He doesn't sound too happy about it, either.]

_{[He's expecting the confirmation. He's getting better at telling a hallucination from reality and he knows the video had been real, but...]}

Angels can't figure it out?

_{[This is the next question out of his mouth. They can bring someone back from the dead, but not know how a person died with their... whatever magical angelic powers? Don't they know things no normal human could?]}

[Had Castiel been in a position where he was watching from Heaven, he would have been able to see it, of course. But here in Wonderland, his influence is stripped down. He can't simply look at a corpse and know who made it that way.

No, we can't. Lucifer may know -- he found the body, but I doubt you want to speak to him directly. He wouldn't tell me much.

[Castiel, and most angels, tend to understate things. Unless they're upset about something, in which case every repressed emotion can easily come to the surface. Dean would know, after getting beaten around an alley by Castiel in one particular instance.]

He may know. [Castiel lets out a sigh.] But I don't have any sway over Lucifer. He outright ignored the question when I asked, and continued to do so when I persisted.

[Which makes it even more suspicious, but it could also be Lucifer's pride -- that he doesn't want to admit that he's as clueless as the rest of them.]

I know you go to great effort to keep yourself safe, but you might want to double those for now. We don't know how this person is choosing their targets.

_{[It's Satan. Adam does all he can not to remember who he'd spent time with in the Cage if he has to remember the Cage at all, but it's Satan. If someone or something living in the mansion and murdering other people in it, then the Devil can probably smell the crazy on them like a shark smelling blood in the water.

[There's a possibility that it could be something supernatural, but Castiel doubts that. The way that Dean's body had been dismembered had been deliberate, and not in any form that matched what Castiel knew of monsters.

Werewolves tore out the heart and nothing more. With a vampire, there would have been gashes all along the throat. And so on. No, this feels as if it's a human's doing. He thinks all of them can sense that.

At least Adam seems to understand the danger involved.]

No. I've tried. [Dean's died in this place prior to this, but that was before his memory had been wiped.] This should be his first death, for this iteration, so he'll be back after a day has passed.

_{[Adam is quiet for a short while.]}

Then if he saw who jumped him, do the rest of us a favor and put them down.

_{[That's all Adam can ask. If they can't do anything else to set things right or make Wonderland more tolerable, at least they can make sure the buck stops with Dean getting the torture treatment.]}

[There's little doubt in Castiel's mind that if Dean did remember who killed him, that they would both take action with it. His guess is that Dean will very little information for them, though.]

It's common knowledge here that death is impermanent. I doubt that this killer would have been sloppy enough to let themselves be seen.

[That isn't the only problem with this, either.]

And if I were to find out who it was and... put them down, they would come back as well. [It would only escalate things. There needs to be some better way to put a stop to this, and he can't say that adding to the bloodshed is necessarily the right course of action here. Castiel's hardly a pacifist, but he also isn't going to blindly kill when it won't help the situation.]

I know that. I didn't mean give them an eye for an eye and hope for the best, I meant make sure they can't do it again. I've got faith you know a few ways to neuter someone and just make them wish they were dead.

[As it turns out, not all angels are the same. Castiel takes some offense at the implication, but the only sign of that is that there's a harshness to his tone.

Yes, he could maim someone and confine them to a bed if that was what it took, and maybe that would be the best for everyone here and their safety. Maybe that's what this killer deserves. But the thought hadn't actually occurred to Castiel until Adam brought it up.]

... There are a few possibilities. If this person is human, I could immobilize them easily enough. [Though he doesn't sound too pleased by the concept.]

_{[Adam ignores the first comment. Castiel and Samandriel feeling like they need to get up in arms about someone pointing out what they're capable of isn't his concern. They can do it, and Adam thinks they'd be lying if they said they wouldn't do it if push came to shove.

Directly to the point, that's angels. In this case, that toy soldier attitude is a good thing. It could mean the difference between letting a serial killer pick off a few more mansion residents for kicks, and keeping them down for the count so the people even more vulnerable than Dean don't have to worry they're going to end up a piece of human art.]}

[Castiel is capable of plenty, and in some cases willing to use his powers regardless of how destructive they may be, but it's not his first instinct the way it might be with Michael or Lucifer.

They can all agree that they don't want those two involved, though, which means it falls on him to take on that burden.

Perhaps he shouldn't see it as such. All he'd be doing is bringing Dean's killer to justice, and that will also keep others safe in the future.]

I doubt this one will give himself up to it the way that Tom did.

[These murders are too calculated to be the work of someone with mental issues who isn't able to control himself. This killer knows exactly what he's doing, and that's what they should all be frightened of.]

But you're right, something needs to be done. As soon as we can uncover who it is.

_{[Would Michael even help stop someone from killing the rest of his vessels? He hasn't stepped in before, and obviously hadn't stepped in to help Dean this time. He'd crossed Adam's mind, just for a flicker of a second as someone who might have an interest in interfering, but both Michael and Lucifer are the greater of two evils. They could do so much worse.

Castiel's selection hadn't been random, as a matter of course. Out of anyone who could make a quick fix happen, Adam had thought of the one angel who seemed to have a thing for pulling the Winchesters' asses out of the fire.]}

[It's true that little else would inspire Castiel as much as Dean's death. Granted, he won't be the only one trying to hunt this killer down, which means that whoever it is will no doubt go to great effort to stay hidden.

Adam brings up a good point with that question, though. If this person is the same one who carried out the other murders, then it stands to reason they'll slip up eventually.

His mouth twists downward and he sighs into the receiver.]

I know of two other unexplained murders, but I couldn't say with confidence that it's the same person.

[It would be easier if it was, as then they'd only have to track down one person, not two or three.]

[Castiel's as frustrated about his impotence here as Adam must be. If there was a way for him to somehow surmise who had been killed simply by studying the bodies, he would have gotten to the bottom of this a long time ago.

He may not know the two other victims, but that doesn't mean that the murdering should have been allowed to continue. Enough's enough.

Before Adam can hang up, Castiel interjects with one last tidbit of information.]

John Blake -- do you know him? He's been on the investigation team. He has experience with it from his home. He would be good resource.

[If Adam's decided he wants to be a part of this process, Castiel won't turn him away. But in this case, he may not be the best person to consult, so better to turn him to someone else.]

I don't know all of those involved, but Blake is one of the principle members. There are at least two others working with him.

[Castiel hasn't been directly involved, and he regrets that now. Though if any of them had actually uncovered anything, no doubt the news would have spread by now.

Still, Blake's bound to know more about the details of the deaths than Castiel himself, so he would be worth speaking to.]

_{[Then maybe he'll have to ask Blake if he feels like diving headfirst down this rabbit hole. He can definitely talk to Blake easier than most of Dean's friends and family; Blake's one of the few people who's juggled having the pedigree Winchesters and the bastard version in his little black book at the same time.
